Pulmonary disease specialists have specialized knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and treatment of lung conditions and diseases. With the various clinical problems that pulmonologists encounter, they are required to have knowledge of internal medicine, as well as other specialities before they can receive certification.

At present, the challenges in this field of medicine are numerous. These challenges are caused by lifestyle and environmental factors, like air pollution and habitual smoking, which contribute to the rising rates of lung disease globally and are further exacerbated by social inequality and limited access to healthcare.

Due to the complicated nature of this field of medicine, pulmonologists are not only required to be knowledgeable and experienced in diagnosing pulmonary diseases and disorders. They must also be able to monitor and supervise special services and facilities, like critical care or respiratory care units, pulmonary function laboratories, and pulmonary rehabilitation facilities, among others.

Pulmonary disease specialists are also expected to be able to treat and manage the condition of critically ill patients. This includes overseeing and interpreting various tests, procedures, services, and treatments in other areas of medicine, such as cardiology, infectious diseases, and many others.
