Understanding chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder

Most people visiting their pulmonary internist suffer from a condition called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This disorder affects approximately 12 million people in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this figure may actually be higher, since many sufferers do not know they have this condition. This is a rather frightening thought, as COPD is seen to be the fourth leading cause of death in the nation.

COPD is often called a “progressive” lung disease because intensity levels worsen over time and as the person ages. Studies also show that COPD affects more men than women, even if the death rate for both genders is the same.

It is therefore important that a basic understanding of this disease be known. This includes understanding the causes and symptoms. If a person suspects himself or herself having this illness, it is highly recommended that they visit their nearest internist.

The main cause of this disorder is smoking. Typically, sufferers of COPD are heavy smokers. Since smoking irritates and inflames the lining of the lungs, it is likely that smokers have scars. The number and intensity of scarring increases as the person continues the habit. Inflammation causes the lungs to permanently change; thickening the walls of the airways and producing more mucus. This means that lungs lose their normal elasticity and breathing becomes harder.

Among the symptoms of COPD include an increased sense of breathlessness when active, persistent cough, and chest infections. These symptoms often come and go, which may be another reason why people do not readily seek treatment. However, if the individual finds himself chronically suffering from these symptoms, it is recommended that they schedule an appointment soon with a trusted health professional.
